"What are affirmations and how can I use them?" An affirmation is any statement that we make—whether positive or negative. If affirmations are used consistently, they become beliefs and will always produce results, sometimes in ways that we cannot even imagine.
On a daily basis we give ourselves affirmations, often without realizing it, because we don’t tend to think that each one of our thoughts could be an affirmation. Our subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between a positive or negative thought/affirmation; it just graciously accepts the things will tell it and starts putting them into action, as per our requests!
So now is the time to recognize those thoughts… What is the first thing you say to yourself when you wake up in the morning? When you look in the mirror? When you head out the house to embark on your day? In traffic… At work… Eating meals… and finally the last thoughts that run through your head before drifting off to sleep? Take the time now to notice any patterns… any repeating thoughts and most importantly, are the things you are saying to yourself and putting out to the universe positive or negative?
It is never too late to change your thoughts and start manifesting the life, confidence, abundance, happiness, peace, or love you desire.
If you tell yourself “I’m not lovable” “I’m not good enough” the universe will continue to provide you with confirmations that that affirmation is true. Along with a lot of other common thoughts that we may have at one time or another, such as; “I don’t deserve good things”, “things never work out for me”, “life = struggle”, “I never get a good night’s sleep”, “I’ll never lose the weight I want”, “people don’t respect me”, “I never have enough money”, “it will be too hard to quit smoking”, “I dread going to work”…
Wise men have said… what you focus on – expands, so without even realizing it, you are continuing to bring exactly what you DON’T want into your life… Why not change some of these thoughts around and start bringing into your life what you DO want…
Here are a few examples of positive affirmations:
- I am lovable, likable and worthwhile
- I always get a good night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed
- I deserve good things and life flows to me with ease and joy
- Abundance flows to me from every corner of my life
- Everything in my life is in divine right order
- I deserve prosperity in all forms
- I choose the thoughts that heal, cleanse and uplift me
- I make good decisions for me
- I know how to have healthy boundaries
- I graciously accept all the joy of life with open arms
- I release the need to compare myself to others
- I see with love my past, present and future
You can turn any thought into a positive affirmation, just so long as it is uplifting and in the best and highest interest of yourself and others. It is also best to affirm your statement in the present tense, rather then saying “one day I will live in the house of my dreams” instead affirm “My new home is exactly as my heart desires”.
Of course it is tricky to make an immediate change, so you must remember to be gentle with yourself as you start to turn off your negative mind. The ego has one sole purpose and that is to keep us down in the dark instead of being the true, magnificent, light beings that we are… So if you find those negative thoughts wandering in, just notice them and either thank them and release them or say “cancel, cancel, cancel” and move onto a more positive thought instead. It will get easier as you go!
To start with, try saying a positive affirmation 10 times every night before you go to sleep (example: I love life and life loves me and I look forward to tomorrow and all the gifts it will bring). Before you know it you will feel more optimistic, life and positive things you desire will flow to you more naturally and you will be able to appreciate life and all its beauty much more easily.
“The greatest discovery of our generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. As you think, so shall you be” – William James
Namaste and positive thoughts to you!
