Physical Pain serves more then one purpose in our lives. For instance, in situations where it is there to warn the body before getting injured or letting our body know that we are damaged and need to do something about it. A good example is working in the kitchen, your hand touches a hot burner and you immediately pull away before incurring a serious burn. Without this kind of pain our survival would be threatened.
However, when the pain gets to a point where it no longer serves a useful purpose or we have nothing more to learn from its message, then we need some form of relief.
If you are someone who has experienced chronic pain for any length of time, you know how life debilitating it becomes. You whole life revolves around your pain, and you may even feel like you are destined to suffer for the rest of your life. Most people who suffer from chronic pain have already been to doctors, taken medication, or perhaps tried alternative methods of coping, but they continue to suffer. Your whole life can be consumed by the constant awareness of pain.
Researchers have found that clinical hypnotherapy significantly and consistently decreases the experience of chronic pain. Hypnosis offers help where medication and alternative medicine have failed.
How does it work?
Pain is not just physical but psychological, therefore, hypnosis works by eliminating the conditioning in the brain that supports and reacts to the physical pain. For example, have you ever cut yourself without realizing it until some time later? And it was only when you actually noticed the cut that it started to feel painful? Up until that moment, your mind had successfully ignored the pain signals from your body. This is actually something we are all naturally able to do. Or another example is ‘phantom limb pain’ where pain continues to be felt in an amputated body part. This demonstrates the fact that pain is strengthened by our mind. If we can eliminate the emotional side of pain it will automatically decrease the physical.
In hypnosis, and then through self-hypnosis, the person suffering from chronic pain is taught to alter the brain’s perception of the pain message, to turn down the intensity or to produce its own internal medication, through physical relaxation and sensory alteration.
